Coming from Colombia, I was already biased against Costa Rica. What could it possibly offer beyond the natural setting and perfect weather I was already enjoying in Medellin? Personally, I prefer forgotten places—run-down, off-track, free of tourists. So, naturally, the world-famous Costa Rica didn’t seem like my kind of place.

But I was wrong. Yes, it feels overdone, pricey, and very much like North America’s playground with the usual fast-food chains cluttering the view. Still, it has surprisingly little concrete sprawl and some remarkably well-preserved, lush forests filled with life. Like nowhere else.
